After two months of study, and showing up at all the club social get-togethers with my study materials. I went for the Extra exam last night and passed it. The W5YI study book and voice CD's were very helpful along with my ham buddy Artie WB0JMG, who has a degree in EE and was able to explain (over explain, hi hi) many of the finer points. Now the guys will stop telling me to "Take the darn test, won't you!".

When I told the head VE examiner, "Well that is the last test I have to take" he said no, one more, take the VE exam and join us on our VE team.

You know, I think I will.

Thanks Dan,
Hang in there. I used the practice test until my scores consistently ran between 82 and 88. My actual exam score was 86. Surprisingly, there was no need to use my calculator or the scratch paper, most of the math questions could be done in the head or by using the memory aids (ELI the ICE man, larger number divided by the small, etc.). I used what I called "Ham common sense" for a lot of the practical problems, based on being a ham and experience to relate. I accepted that I would miss a certain percentage of the real tough ones. Artie would be glad to help you out I am sure, he is that kind of guy.

Your ham call and the story behind it was very moving. It is a real tribute to your partner who served you and your community well.

73, take care and hope to work you in the Extra bands soon!
