PIXIE II QRP Audio Problems!

From CT1BWW

Hi Everybody!
Recently I built a Pixie II QRP radio from HSC Electronics I couldn't solve audio problems.

The audio sounds like a motor boat as it does nothing but buzz and NO Reception at all .I checked the supply voltage to the LM386 chip and it was about 7 volts. Thinking the LM386 chip was being starved for current I added in parallel another 1k ohm R5 resistor to get 500 ohm and decrease resistance but it just made the boat rev faster.

I have heard of this being a problem on Pixie radios but I am wondering how other have fixed this

I've change Capacitors Cap for 100uf (instead of 10uf) C10 and C11 . The problem persist. I tested with brand New alkaline battery and other different PSU.

Thanking in advance and Good Luck!

Hi Manuel,

You tried a new Alkaline Battery ? That fixed my issue - I did not need to change the caps or resistors. Have you looked at your pick up wires ? I twisted mine to reduce noise.

Hi Bill
That's Ok! I thin the problem was on L1=22uH (seems like brown carbonresistor????.....colours: silver red red black silver) the other coils L2=150uH (brown green brown gold) and L3 40Mts 1,0uh (Brown black gold gold).
Those spares are part from HSC electronics Pixie II Kit.
I was using a 9 Volts battery and Now I use a 10 Volts PSU . I still have strong audio BUZZ but is really different when i I connect with antenna dipole 40 Meters I receive a Big Tunning interference on my TS850 exactly on the QRP Frequency 7040 and if i transmiti with key I can hear the signal. When I switch off PIXIE PSU of course the signal on TS850 disapear ! I've check and couldn't find any error ,as you're outside what do you think was my fault?
Conclusion:
1) I've Audio Big BUZZ ! But I can't hear any RTTY or CW signals!
2) I Transmitt when keying
3) QRP is tunning all the time and never stop when I switch on !

Hi !
One of the good things I've learn on the Scouts was that we´ve to kick the IM ...POSSIBLE, usually I don't Give up easy.
I've replace a NEW L1Coil (Thanks Mark AB9LZ)
I've change negative point from Battery (Thanks Bill KA6KBC)
But I still have audio problems I still have strong audio BUZZ with 10 Volts PSU but NOW with 9Volts Battery is almost gone.
What I found if I connect 10 Volt PSU or the NEW 9Volt Alkaline Battery the PIXIE is TUNNING Transmitting (without key) if I use a 7 Volt battery there is No Tunning . Am I right?
I've check and couldn't find any error ,as you're outside what do you think was my fault?
Conclusion:
1) I Can Have Reception with some signals!
2) Transmitter OK
3) QRP is tunning all the time and never stop when I switch on !
Once again Thanks for Helping!

Hi !
I've replace a NEW L1Coil (Thanks Mark AB9LZ)
I've change negative point from Battery (Thanks Bill KA6KBC)
Audio Problems I think gone I've change the wires and instead Alkaline 9Volts I used Rechargable 9 Volts Battery~.
audio problems I still have strong audio BUZZ with 10 Volts PSU but NOW

The PROBLEM I HAVE IS the PIXIE is TUNNING Transmitting (without key).
When I switch ON I have a Signal on the air exactly on Crystal Frequency.
When I check with receiver I can hear the Tunning from PIXIE II, if a transmit with Key I can hear the Tone clear.

QRP is tunning all the time and never stop when I switch on !Once

Where are the cause of that?

Thanking in advance for a comment!

Again Thanks for Helping!

Hi Manuel,

Transmitting, while receiving is "Normal" for
Direct conversion receivers. It's a Colpitts oscillator, left running, and a keyed power amplifier. There is no external mixer used to feed the audio amplifier. The mixing is done at the final amplifier itself with the audio taken off the emitter.

Tune in with a near by Receiver - Antenna disconnected. You should see "X" S Units. With the Pixies Keyed into a 50 Ohm 1/2 Resistor you should see "X" + "Several S Units".

Sounds like it is working :)

Remeber to add the Cap on the Crystal to Get a RIT.
