Hello my name is Travis and I have been a ham since April 2004. I am 20 years old and I live in PA. I was introduced to ham radio by my grandpa Frank(ke3ck). I have many relatives in the hobby, so you could say its in my blood.
I became a ham shortly after my grandma passed away. I feel that I did so because I needed an out let as well as something to remember her by. she was a ham so I in turn followed in her foot steps. But back to the story. My grand father and I decided to just pick up and go on the road. So he called up some of his ham buddies and mapped out a route. So we made many stops at many qths in many states. All in 13 days. Any way I learned a little more from each person. So when the trip was over I had a new found interest. These hams and friends of my grandfathers gave me a profound inspiration to get my ticket. So I did and the rest is history.
So whats the moral of this so called saga, well that you can find a positive outlet for life in the places you least exspect them.
Do not judge something until you have first experienced it.There are many good people left in this world something that took me a long time to figure out. Amateur radio did this for me and I think it could do so for many others as well.
One last thing with the technological advancements in todays society this younger generation (in which I am part) seems to feel that radio is not important. But thats not true its fun, relaxing, and historical. So if you know some youngsters that are glued to their computers and games and cellphones, show them your radio. And explain to them that without it and its contributers they would never have this stuff that they take for granted everyday. Hey just maybe you spark a flame of curiosity in their minds. Then wala a new ham is born.
