Boosting performance of Homebrew tube rigs

Today while converting an old telephone handset to work on two of my home brew transceivers I decided to spend some time improving the performance of the two tube transceiver. It worked ok but the tank never tuned quite the way I wanted and the power was a bit shy of what I thought it should be. As I played with it I found it had its tank varicap wide open at peak and that is never a good sign when any control runs full. First I checked all the solder connections and repaired any I thought suspicious. Then I added a simple 20pf worth of disc ceramics (two 10pfs) to pull the cap back into full range. I fired it up to recheck. WOW! Peak was now at about 3/4 open setting on 7295khz. Power was wau up lighting the antenna current indicator (52 bulb in series with antenna output. In fact I can light it enuf I fear it may pop. Before I could get a dull glow in the dark. I plugged in the handset. one plug to the earphone jack and one to the mic jack and gave it a try. I could hear W8GPA calling CQ. Signal was about an S3 and he didn't reply but I could hear on the monitor rx and see in the in shack FS signal was way up. Maybe if the band comes around tonite I will give it a serious try. This rig is also loop modulated but in the PA tank on the way out.
