I have moved out of my ham shack and moved into the basement bedroom. My second harmonic is coming soon and we have made my old shack into a baby girls room. My old shack is now pink and light green.
I am happy that a I moved really. I now have a 12'x12' shack with a love seat and three chairs. Plenty of room for friends to stop by and ham it up. As soon as I get a new camera that works I will post some new pix of the new shack. Have a great and Blessed day and have Great DX!!! 73, Stuart W8STU

When My son was born I used to leave a 1/2 watt Hand Held (900mhz)near his crib on VOX. As he grew older he knew if he called out for Daddy, I would hear it from anywhere on the property. Now at 19 he has his ticket AND Respects Amateur Radio Rules.. HE even has the old HT, and plans to use it for his own Baby Monitor when his Daughter is born in July...

Way to go, Stu!
Girls are fun parenting too, and offer challenges for excellence that guys never offer.
At the age of 12 my daughter had sooooo many guns, AND her 'hardship' drivers license too boot! She was my hunting buddy.
They grow up/away much too fast... sigh...
Give our best to "D?".

W8STU's Blog Post - 1/15/2009 9:57:11 PMIT SURE IS COLD AROUND HEREWell, it is 0550 HRS. UTC. 16/JAN/2009 here and it is -5 Deg F or about -21 Deg C.... -25 Deg. F with the windchill. We have a foot of snow on the ground and more lake effect snow coming. Mercy! I had to put my Carhart insulated bib overalls on, Carhart insulated coat, ski mask and gloves just to take the dog out. My dog did not like it much either. He kept on raising his paws off the ground for about 30 seconds before he walked.
I know some other areas up North are a lot colder. Especially up in Lex's neck of the woods. But for our area, (N/E Ohio.) That is cold for us. It is so cold my dipole stopped tuning up with the internal tuner. Mercy! Oh well, I am hoping for warmer days, say 20's 30's maybe. I hope everyone is keeping warm. Good DX! 73, Stuart W8STU

So THATS where our winter went!
Mornin' Stu and the net.
Reading the posts you and Anthony made make me nostalgic for winter. Ours roared in with promises of many things, then wussed out.
Its 23F now and they say it'll hit 40F today. We haven't had enough snow this year to slip and fall on! This summer will probably see reduced beef herds (lack of grass). Beef prices will more'n likely drop when they glut the market, then climb severely when the surplus is digested.
Wish we could have our wx back, pretty please?

Hey Lex,
You can have the below zero weather. We had a high today of 8F... It is zero right now and is supposed to be go somewhere below -10 Deg. F tonight. Not very good for my truck battery. Ole Betsy takes a few cranks before she starts. Come on 20's........... Great DX to you. 73, Stuart W8STU

Our windchills are killer. The other day we had windchill that placed off the chart. Had straight-line wind of 104mph+. The turbines start shutting themselves down (for safety) around 60mph. They sent us home with pay. (See why my antennas don't last?)
I like to see folks still naming vehicles and such. My first car "Esmerelda" was a true witch! I drive the old F150 in the pix section, goes by the name of DracOILa. Not a very 'green' ride for someone in my line o'work, but he takes the abuse of WY roads.
My favorite rifle is 'Ripper', for R.oast I.n the P.ot!
Did ya'll hear if your having a boy/girl yet, or is it still too soon to tell?
73 and the best to your family.

Thanks for the connection here, Stu!
Well, in my neck of the woods this afternoon, it was a very chilly 63 degrees! HI HI! (Grid EL-87qt)
This evening is going to be cold here! No kidding this time! Our local weather says it's gonna be 32 tonight. Hey listen, i know that most all of you guys up that way are thinking "That's not cold"... but for West Central Florida's Gulf Coast, it's plenty cold! Ya Gotta admit it's an even trade for the snowbelt states though... In April we start our Hurricane Season here.... which runs until Nov 1st. Can anyone say 120 mph wind cyclones? Ahhh, the JOYS of living in Paradise!
HI HI... Last Hurricane Season was a quiet one here on the West Coast of Florida. Hopefully, we will repeat last the year... this year!
Stay warm, Stu!

UTC. and the snow has blanketed the ground once again. They always say, "Your antenna will work better if you put it up in bad weather." Well, that is true.
My friend, Joe/KB8QID came over yesterday and we put up a real nice dipole. It is called the W5GI MYSTERY ANTENNA. My other friend, Kevin/W8KDC put it together for me and he stated it was very easy to make.
Joe and I braved the cold and snowy weather and put this antenna up. Joe is very handy with a fishing pole and was able to cast a line approx., 60 feet into an 80 foot oak tree. We strung up the first leg and stretched the antenna over the yard until we got to the back yard.
The back yard oak tree is approx., 70 feet. Joe cast the fishing line up to a limb with a fork in it. We lost three sinkers on this limb due to smaller limbs growing from it. We were out of sinkers, so I thought of using PL259s. Don't laugh, it worked! HI HI. We got the other leg pulled up and secured. It just so happened the ladder line came right down to the peak of the house where the other coax come down to the side of the house and into a neatly cut hole with PVC pipe is located and into the shack.
We hooked the Mystery Antenna up to my Yaesu FT-950 and WOW what a difference from the vertical I was using. Night and day difference! I was able to tune this 80 meter through 2 meter dipole on 80/20/17/10/6/ meters with the internal turner on the FT950. Two meters did not need a turner with my Icom IC-910H. Thats right it is actually resonent on 2 meters. Joe and I played on the bands I could tune and we got great signal reports on the Mystery Antenna.
I would highly recomended this antenna if you are on a budget. Materials are easily received from a hardware store and coax from the local amateur radio store for not much money. And it works GREAT. I have placed the link to W5GI's website at the bottom of this blog so you can check out more details and instructions on the antenna. Give the Mystery Antenna a try. 73, Stuart W8STU

Lex,
The CHA250B works pretty well for what it is. I have worked a lot of stations with it, but when I did a side by side comparison the W5GI Mystery Antenna beat the Comet vertical hands down. That's to be expected though. I still use the Comet for six meter FM work and ten meter work when I find out the other station is using a vertical. 73, Stuart W8STU

W8STU's Blog Post - 11/22/2008 1:57:16 PMFIRST SNOW DAMAGE AT STATION - W8STUGreetings, fellow amateur radio enthusiast. Well, it is 2144 HRS. UTC 22/NOV/2008 at the W8STU shack. The first snow and wind gave me some problems. I took a picture and posted it on my page.
The snow hit us before we knew it. Local forecasters were only calling for a couple of inches and we ran out of daylight, so we did not have time to take the top off of our screened in gazebo. Well, after the snow was over, (eight inches) which is really not much for the snow belt of N/E Ohio standards. The gazebo roof collapsed. (See new posted picture of my son and gazebo.) What a mess. We have since have added a few more inches to the mix.
My antennas took a small hit also. They are not damaged, but are now leaning towards the East. Not too bad, but is noticeable. I was going to take a picture, but they did not show up too well on the camera. I hope all is having great DX even though the sunspots are very few. "C'mon sun we need some sunspots all ready!" 73, from cold N/E Ohio. Not too bad yet, 28oF -1oC right now. Keep warm. 73, Stuart W8STU

I feel for you.
Last week was terrible for me. Lots of things beyond my control went poorly.
Finally got my rigs hooked up in the wifes garage & powered by my F150 mobile power supply. WX will soon curtail trips to the cabin for this season, even if I replace the batteries and manage to get the wind genny back online.
Last year I lost a wire dipole, a random wire AND a rigid dipole to ice loading with heavy winds. This year I'm running one rigid dipole and a ground plane. Soon I hope to be entirely vertical. Ice/snow, wind, and two species of eagles sort'a put a nix on horizontal installations.
Happy TurkeyDay to you & yours.

Road crew got the snow cleared from the roads though. Though, morning commute was a little difficult for some commuters for the winter's first measurable snow. Seems like the first snow and everyone forgets how to drive. People were everywhere off the side of the road.
I am glad I am retired. No more directing traffic in the in climate weather for me. If I look out the window and it looks bad then I stay home. I hope everyone's antennas in N/E Ohio are OK. 73, Stu W8STU
Well, It's 0520 HRS UTC 13/NOV/2008 and one look at the yard and all you see now are the thousands of leaves that fell. My wife and I raked them up once. W8STU's Blog Post - 10/25/2008 10:25:41 PMNEW PICTURES OF THE SHACKWell, It is 26,OCT. 2008 at 0500 hrs. UTC in the morning and I am up, (as usual) playing radio. I am a night person. I worked 18 years for the local Police Dept. There I worked 9 years of afternoon shift and 9 years on midnight shift. I think working all of those night shifts turned me into a night crawler. HI HI. I don't go to bed these days until around 4:00 AM...
The new pictures I posted are of my current shack, 2008. I hope you enjoy them. I have been setting at the helm for hours checking the DX spotter and rag chewing. I hope everyone has a great week. Have great DX contacts. 73, Stuart W8STU
Well, it is 0216 UTC 29, OCT 2008 and I have added a couple pictures of my 1930's Zenith chair side AM/SW radio. It has been refurbished and works great. The white cord coming from it is the antenna. It is a beautiful piece of furniture in the shack. 73, Stuart W8STU
Well, it is 0155 hrs UTC 04, Nov., 2008. I went out today and performed my constitutional God given right and I voted today. It does not matter who I voted for, but I did go out and vote. I have not missed a presidential vote since I turned 18 years old. I have missed one, (I think), one issue vote in all of these years. I hope the rest of you hams in America went out and voted today. Your vote counts and it makes a difference. God Bless all of the Hams in world, God Bless America and God Bless all of our troops! 73, Stuart W8STU
Well, it's 0025 HRS. UTC 06, NOV. 2008. What a day! My wife and I had a job on our hands today. I am surrounded here with VERY large trees. That means in the fall we have thousands of leaves falling off of the trees. We tried as we might to gather them up. We spent two hours raking. We raked them onto a large tarp and dragged them to woods, (three times.) I then cut the grass. Well, an hour later and the front yard was full again. :-( Sigh. We did not even attempt the back yard yet. WoW!
Well, anyway. I did post another picture today. I bought an Yaesu banner from off of ebay. I am a real big Yaesu fan. It is real nice. It is 30"x36" in size. It seems like it is made out vinyl plastic type of material. I put it on the wall and took a picture of it. The flash put a shine on it, but you can see most of what it looks like. 73, Stuart W8STU
