YC156/3CPX5000A7

I have my capacitor bank rounded up for the high voltage supply. The important parts like the transformer and the vacuum variables are next. I would really like to find a 240 volt 40 amp or so variac, so i can adjust the supply voltage for better control of the circuit. I have the Rf cabinet being made by a good friend of mine skilled in metalwork. The YC156 tube and chimney and rectifier blocks are sitting on my shelf. I got a good deal from another good friend of mine on that.. Thanks K4ZC!I have recently added a new very nice roller inductor made specially for surplus sales to the parts bin and a new bench variac.

Station report

Well its been a little while since ive posted and a few things have changed... the 6 element hygain is up and working great! 20 meters never seems to close now..if you havent had a beam on 20 you dont know what your missing...worked a good bit of dx on 10 meters lately the band has been open almost every day. It seems that 40 meters is the most active dx band late at night so ive been working a bunch of people down there early morning..
Im gathering parts for my yc156 amp, got the cabinet im gonna use, the plate choke, some very nice oil filled caps and looking for a 4500 volt transformer at 1.2 amps or so to get the power supply section up and running. The way i figure it this critter will do legal limit+ 24/7 without breaking a sweat.
The skills gained from this project are priceless!
Comment from WP4K 7/4/2009 12:39:59 PM
Well, it's all about the hobby isn't :-) I most excuse myself for not replying to your connection request but was under lot's of pressure at the time.

I'm still working on my come-back to HAM, do have all eqpt/antennas/gadgets and the like, but have been on a battle with my "brain" and the "body", they just don't want to work together as before ja ja... I don't remember if it shows on the qrz/this webpage, but I also have a 160/10L, that's been with me for 15-20 years, at the time is not operational as I acquired others along the way but is on my plans to restore it for 40m/80m only... I did some"surgery" to it, mainly keeping the fullload/noload level's(ig,bias, plate VDC) and that good ole'boy pumped 900-1000w no sweat.

I got manuals and some mods, if you need they are your's..

hope we can chat soon...

But the satisfaction of having it and bragging rights are MINE!!

Amateur extra class

Im gonna go take the extra test very very soon...hope i make it
Comment from KJ4FUU 2/23/2009 11:23:25 AM
I took mine and missed two questions. One of them had to do with voltage leading or lagging current with capacitive reactance. Afterwards, I learned the mnemonic "ELI the ICEman", which shows that voltage (E) leads current (I) with inductive reactance (L), and current leads voltage with capacative reactance (C).

I didn't take any classes, I just read the ARRL Extra Class Manual. You should be fine.

Good luck,

I have upgraded the shack computer to a abit 3ghz with 2 gig ram and win 7 beta...so far so good all my programs work good on it

Good luck with that K4TTY. Been reading stuff like this http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/secu/article.php/3801341/Microsoft-on-Windows-7-Security-We-Give-In.htm
for awhile now, but I also remember my first XP experience being a lemon too. That was an incredible experience! I forgot to backup my stuff, and all user created files were poked into a randomly created cache folder. I finally found my stuff by opening things better left alone.
This internet has been fun. But I really expect someone, someday, to create a virus that takes it down. Of course the older I get, the more my thinking turns to gloom~n~doom fatalism.

ISS antenna

I have been tracking the ISS using my hamradio deluxe program and have decided to build a eggbeater style antennna. Ill make the phasing section soon as i get some 100 ohm coax and it will be test time!
Comment from VE3TMT 2/1/2009 2:10:35 PM
I've been using HRD for a while now tracking the ISS. Made contact using my Cushcraft A27010S beam at 15' but here the ISS much better on my vertical at 20'. Will have fun once the beam goes up on the tower in the spring.

160 meter loop

Today i added some more wire to my 160 loop, got it resonant around 1.795 lol...now seems to tune easier...still havent added the 4:1 balun just feeding it with 9913 and using the tuner...
Comment from K4BTC 3/1/2009 4:44:03 PM
Hey Vic,

Thanks for the invite. I gladly accept. I am interested in your 160 meter loop. I have a 1/2 wave dipole up @ 70 feet and it works great on all bands. I am thinking of making a loop as the 1/2 wave is on a south west - north east orientation and I cannot put up another dipole because of lack of structures ie.."trees" I found a great website called rogertango.com. The owner describes in great detail how to build your own 4:1 balun. It was so easy I built 2 and they work great on the dipole with window line. I'll be keeping up with your posts as I have just bought the wire for the loop (YIKES!!) 500ft of #12 stranded insulated. Now saving for the window line.

Antenna update

I now have the 160 meter loop up and running...now to figure out all the tuning points for multiband operation and see how well it does...its not very high up and not hardly long enough but more wire can be added later and maybe raised in a few places...
Comment from WY0MN 1/25/2009 7:43:13 AM
I probably won't be able to use a loop due to wx hr, and the fact I detest ATU's, but I am curious about your antenna. Can we have more specifics? Did you use something similar to
http://ka1fsb.home.att.net/loopcalc.html ?
Lex

Comment from KW4VL 1/25/2009 10:28:16 AM
Yes i used the loop calc to figure out the resonant freq according to length and went from there. The wire is cheap electric fence aluminum wire bought in a 1/2 mile roll from the local hardware store and then rolled out around mine and my neighbors on both sides property lol...crossed the creek behind my house twice but the neighbors helped me put it up...nice of them huh? It works very well on 160 and seems to tune up well on some of the other bands with a mfj-962d tuner. Im going to add a nice 4:1 balun next and see what happens..

Welcome

Hello and welcome to my new page...
I live in Rose Hill Virginia and im medically retired so i spend some of my free time playing with ham gear and antennas to pass the time. Ham radio is a good hobby but it can get expensive and time consuming if you get to dxing very much.

Im going to upload some new photo's soon and maybe some items for sale/trade also.
thanks for looking k4tty/victor
Comment from N2UGB 4/26/2008 11:11:10 AM

The hobby is only as expensive as you want it to be. Don't read all the ads in the publications or get sick at heart when you read the equipment lineups of of many hams. There is a lot of decent gear out there for sale, used. They just don't have all of today's bells and whistles. I haven't bought a brand new piece of gear in years. I have bought some second and third hand equipment, though.

I remember back in the early '80's QSOing Russian hams who, at the time, didn't have a pot to **** in. Their home-brew or cheap-as-possible transmitters made it across Europe and into the East Coast of the U.S.A.
