Introduction

I' just getting started setting up my Ham Shack. I am a 100% Disabled Vietnam Veteran, living on a fixed income. I'm new to the Hobby and am slowly trying to enter the world of Ham Radio. Being on a limited budget it'll be a long slow process.

I was a Field Radio Operator in the Marine Corps in Vietnam and then spend 23 years in Public Safety Communications starting as a dispathcer and retiring as a Manager of a County-wide 9-1-1 Dispatch Center. With my background it seemd logical to VHF and UHF FM.

First - Thank you for your service!

It sure looks like you are well on your way to having a great shack there.

I tested in May 2011 and Passed my Technician and General exams. I have wanted to get licensed for years but never did due to becoming disinterested while trying to learn CW. I was glad when they did away with that part of the test. I still have that on my list of things to accomplish however...

I have a couple of radios, one a Quad Band Yaesu FT-8900, a 2m FT-2800, a cheap dual band HT, and two 2m Motorola radio systems that are not in use.

I recently started looking at HF radios because I have not ventured into that realm yet and feel like there is more to this crazy little hobby! I will have to get creative with my antenna options due to the HOA Nazis but thats what this hobby is all about isn't it?

I guess it comes down to what you want to do with your knowledge and time as it pertains to the hobby. I like you, have been in public service for 20+ years. Started out as a dispatcher for a small Police Dept. (Only briefly) then went on the street as a LEO and have been ever since.

My idea of HAM Radio I think centers more on the public service aspect and helping in emergencies etc. Like you it sounds, I have more time than money! Hahaha.

Good luck. There is a wealth of knowledge out there. It is a fascinating hobby.
