K8ELR's Classified Ad - 10/20/2008 1:11:20 PMWANTED ICOM PS-125I am looking for an ICOM PS-125. I'm am not concerned about a scratch, nick or minor dent as long as it is 100% operational.
Must be resonably priced.
I am not interested in buying any other PS as I have other power supplies to use. I am looking for a PS-125 because of it's size and weight. I plan on shipping it to my winter QTH.
Thanks 73,

K8ELR's Blog Post - 7/2/2008 1:39:50 PMField Day 2008Hi,
I am just now updating my blog and realized I didn't finish my entry for FD 2008.
This years FD was the most fun I've had on FD. I volunteered to be a coach at the GOTA station this year. For the past several years W8PGW and W8UM team up and run FD together. For the GOTA station we use W8PGW and the regular FD stations use W8UM. This allows the Arrow Club and the radio club at the University of Michigan to gather and support each other.
This year was kind of sad for me assisting in the GOTA station because of the passing of my friend AB8ZI. Mark was a great guy who worked in the GOTA station last year.
This year we had a great turn out of members and their families. We also had a great turn out at the GOTA station of newly upgraded hams and unlicensed vistors.
The rain stayed away long enough to get most of the stuff setup Friday night and we were all ready Saturday morning.
I'm hoping next year is even better!

K8ELR's Blog Post - 3/8/2008 2:57:55 PMusing standard phonetiics I haven't posted here in a while and this subject came up today on HRHG yahoo group.
This is a subject that I think is important. At least it is to me. Believe me I like to have fun with this hobby. My answer to this new ham about using standard phonetiics was not to dampen his enthusiasm but to make him aware that standard phonetics are something to be used and are important to a new ham.
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK..

Hi,
My suggestion is to learn the proper phonetic alphabet. Stay with the standard (there are minor deviations) as much as possible unless you
are just talking to friends on a repeater. There is nothing worse than trying to work a station that uses some made up phonetics.
Especially when the station is very weak. Most all DX stations do use the standard. I worked a OM in Romania who not only used non-standard phonetics with his Romanian accent. It was
tough to figure out. Actually the Romanian accent was not bad it was his Yahoo Open 2 call would been much easier to figure out if he used
Yankee Oscar 2.

Phonetics are important when signals are not arm chair copy and sometimes just as important when they are loud. We had a large number of busted calls in the Illinois QSO Party a couple of years ago with the club call W9OAB. Most of the busted calls were W9OAD, amking me think the operators using the club station (all new licensees) were not using phonetics properly.
Depending on your voice characteristics, the standard IARU phonetics have a few issues but you sure don't want to get too cutesie. One of our club calls is W9AWE and we had a Field Day operation years ago where one of our newer licensees was using Whiskey Nine All Watermelon Eaters. It was funny at first, but it sure didn't bring up the QSO count any. Do follow standard phonetics, but in my case, I have found out with my voice and speech characteristics, I usually am understood better if I use Norway Germany Nine Radio than November Golf Nine Romeo. I use both but when I get requests 2 or 3 times for repeats, I seem to have beetr luck with my non-standard phonetics.

K8ELR's Blog Post - 2/1/2008 12:01:44 PMEver get tired of reading QRZ, eHam or QTH??Hi,
I am really getting tired of reading the CRAP from all the angry and nasty people on the ham radio web sites.
I have to say that if I had read all that stuff before I got my license I would have dropped the whole idea.
I think some of that stuff is not good for amateur radio. Any prospective future ham would probably figure everyone involved in this hobby is an old nasty, cranky bastard.
I have met some fine people associated with ham radio and I'm sure I'll meet a lot more. To them I say thanks. I'll always be greatful.
I have to just stop reading and contributing to those disussions on those sites. You know, from now on I'll spend my time on the air havin' fun!

The number of keyboard jockeys has surpassed the number of licensed hams and is getting worse every day. We are RADIO operators, I can't understand this fixation with spending more time on the internet than on the air. Hopefully it is just a propagation thing and as propagation picks back up, there will be more QSO's on the air than on the internet.
I agree, the trash you read on the chat rooms and discussion boards drives me crazy. I sure don't point prospective hams to those type of sites for information.

If you look closely at those sites you will notice that the people who get into those arguments are genrally the same select few individuals who are always arguing there and have tens of thousands of posts - pretty much they have no life and spend too much time on internet forums.
Don't worry about them. They're so busy fighting on the web that they're not spending any time on the air.

A bit late for my reply, but had to add my agreement regarding the "big two" amateur radio sites and the nasty, mean-spirited postings on them.
I haven't browsed QRZ in several years. That was the lowest of them all. E-ham was half-way decent but has now sunk to the same level.
Best thing to do is restrict one's self to sites that are directed to preferred amateur activity or equipment. I am a QRP nut so joined a couple QRP organizations that have web sites and are operated in a courteous manner. Two sites dedicated to my specific radio gear, also courteously managed. And, SKCC that maintains web sites. Yahoo groups are, usually, very helpful, informative, and monitored. There is a reason for their existance, and it isn't to provide a forum to shoot one's mouth off on.
As I said, go to specific interest groups, usually on Yahoo, and join.

This was my first asian contact.
Quite a thrill for me. I have only been on HF since Feb 2007.

K8ELR's Blog Post - 8/2/2007 9:04:42 AMQSL cards. What do you think?I was reading my friends blog and began to really think about QSL cards. There is a lot of controversy about QSL CARDS. Should they be used at all? LOTW, eQSL are all out there. I have an account at eQSL but I still send qsl cards either thru the ARRL buro or direct. I QSL 100%. I like getting the cards. I read some statements by a few well known hams that will not qsl. What do you do?

Totally agree, Jim. I also treasure the cards that I receive and many of them are works of art. I QSL 100% and always answer direct with direct. That's how much I enjoy receiving them.

I QSL 100% to all QSLs received. My "paper" QSL paper stock weight is light. However using two different computer programs, I am able to make them photographic should I choose to do so. I really appreciate e-QSL. I am not an awards seeker, therefore their acceptability is not an important matter when I receive them. I think just as much effort is expended in utilizing e-QSL as the regular mail variety. And,they can be just as creative. My e-QSL contains an illustration of a WW1 dreadnought.
Bonjour Dave F5VLT. Je serai chez vous fin de Septembre de Saint Raphael avec mon Buddistick et mon OHR txcvr QRP.

I have a Kenwood THF6A mounted on the handle bars. I am planning to go HF very soon. I have to decide which rig to go with. I have always been an ICOM guy but I want the best rig for this mobile setup. Maybe an IC-703+ or the FT817. If you have some good ideas let me know.

K8ELR's Blog Post - 7/12/2007 5:14:00 PMFT101E goes to a new homeI finally sold my old FT101E. I had posted a few ads on QRZ and Fox Tango web sites. I always said I would not ship it. Pickup only.
Well, a persistent OM, but very courteous I might add convinced me I should sell it to him and ship it to him. So it's off to a new home at N1TKO.
