2012 Prius install

Picked up my new company car the other day. I had a 2010 Prius and got a 2012 Prius. Pretty much the same car but with a few extra comfort features that aren't important here.

Because this isn't my car, it is a fleet lease, I can't drill any holes in metal for the antennas. I don't want to hear anyone complain that I didn't drill.

Check out my pictures for my radio setup.

Primary radio is a Yaesu dual band FT-7900R. APRS radio is a Byonics MicroTrak RTG. The GPS receiver is a Byonics GPS receiver.

Baofeng UV-5R

I had $65 that I wasnt using so I got a Baofeng UV-5R from import communications.us. Not a bad little radio. The menu setup is a little odd when compared to Icom or Yaesu but not too hard to figure out. The manual was written by someone who may have once been in the same room with a native English speaker. The free programming software s worth every penny. Remember to take your blood pressure meda before trying it.

I notice the TYT TH-F8 looks like the same model and is relatively attractive.Thats what I've got. The menu structure is different to the average radio but programming it is strait forward once you get the hang of out.
Good little cheapie. Have fun with your UV-5R

APRS antenna

I decided that trying to put a cross arm on the tower for an APRS antenna was a little silly when I had everything already wired out to the garage where the old antenna mast was. I had to buy a new bracket but I was able to salvage two mostly straight pieces of mast and so now my APRS antenna is up about 20 feet instead of 8. This has increased the range significantly.

Of course, now that I have the TinyTrak4 digipeating nicely I may change the setup to an I-gate/digipeater. I just don't know if I want to leave a computer on all the time for this. I had a spare computer that I just installed Xubuntu 11.10 on along with Xastir. I'm working on the configuration now.

Digipeater up and running

K0ECW-3 is now up and running. Had some difficulty getting the TinyTrak4 configured correctly. I have the TT4 connected to a Yaesu FT-1802R. For several days I was digipeating signals from 10+ miles away but not from my car in the garage 20 feet from the APRS antenna. Turns out that I had the volume set to high on the radio. Once I turned that down I started digipeating my mobile, K0ECW-9. Come spring I plan to add a cross arm and antenna to my tower for the digipeater. Currently the APRS antenna is a dual band J-pole attached to an 8 foot section of mast strapped to a fence post. It works for now but isn't optimal.

APRS home setup

Last week I ordered a TinyTrak4 to use as a TNC so I can set up at least an APRS digipeater and maybe an internet gateway, too. There seems to be a dead zone around my town so I thought I should work on solving the problem myself.
