My Ham Radio Interests
Past calls are KA9KAL (1981 & 1982) and KC9OA (1982 & 1983). I received the call NG9R in 1983 when I passed the extra exam.

I am interested in contesting, weak signal VHF/UHF, homebrew projects (mostly antennas and some amplifier projects), some casual DX chasing, emergency communications, public service work and ragchewing. I dabble in some of the digital modes, mostly WSJT on 6 and 2 meters and some PSK on HF.

I usually operate the June VHF contest from the station of N9JF (in EM49), using my call as a small multi-op effort with N9JF. Most other contesting is split between home (limited antennas) and N9JF's.

I have helped N9JF add more towers and antennas to his modest farm and more are still in the plans.

Equipment
At home I currently have a Kenwood TS-480HX and an LDG auto tuner. For 2 meters and up, I have a Kenwood 711A, another TM-D700A, Kenwood TR-751A, an old Midland 70-340A on APRS, several RF Concepts bricks, plus Downeast Microwave transverters for 222, 432, 903 and 1296. I am still working on a 300 watt 903 amp converted from an old analog cellular phone amp. In the garage is the old "telephone both", my high power solid state 2 meter amplifier. One of these days....

At home I usually use an all band dipole fed with 450 ladder line or a multi-band vertical, plus a 4 element 6 meter, a 13 element 2 meter and a 22 element 432, all at low heights due to restrictions.

At N9JF's, where I do the more serious operating, there is a 2 element 40 meter at 112', a 5 element 10 meter at 120', a TH6 at 85', a 6 element 6 meter at 90', a 16 element 2 meter at 95', a 5 element 15 at 75' and a TA33+40 will be going up at 55' with a 5 element 6 meter at 60'. The VHF/UHF tower should soon have a 12 element 2 meter at 67', a 16 element 222 at 62', a 25 element 432 at 58' and a pair of 55 element loop yagis on 1296 and another pair of 33 element loop yagis for 903 at 55'. That poor tower will have runs of 1 5/8, 1 1/4, 7/8 and 2 runs of 1/2 Heliax going up it. All other towers have 3/4" CATV hardline going to the antennas.

Other Interests
My wife, KA9VIM, has been licensed since about 1984, not sure exactly what year. She is not very active but is very understanding and supportive about my hobbies. Her interests are in working in polymer clay and has her own spot on the web on Etsy.com, username Zudagay.
I also have a son-in-law, AB9QW and a granddaughter, KC9NYN, that are licensed.

I was employed for about 24 years in the assembly, testing, repair and field support of RF equipment for paging infrastructure. Currently I am doing some part time retail sales and a bit of amplifier repair.

I have deepened my relationship with Jesus Christ and that is a major part of my life. I enjoy time with family and watching the grand kids grow and learn.

I also enjoy riding my vintage Goldwing around the local back roads. I also used to enjoy bowhunting and target archery although it has been a few years since I did either due to a bad shoulder. (I believe guns are those those that can't hit anything with a bow and arrow!)
