Update

Almost two years without an entry on this blog. Quite a lot of things have transpired. In my world of ham radio, it has been pretty much filled with all the expectations I have about the hobby. Friends abound and the learning never stops. New people bring new things and ideas for me to learn from. Have operated out at the farm quite a few times and enjoyed each and every one of them. ALmost everyone who has been there has had good experiences. We continue to add things and improve the equipment there. Even our way of operating duuring contests continue to evolve. Hardware improvements are always happening. Of late we have added;
a) 40 meter horizontal loop antenna.
b) VHF omni directional vertical F-23 (h)
c) 10-meter ground plane antenna
d) 15-meter rotatable dipole which will give way to a
e) Spiderbeam antenna
f) Acquired a Yaesu FT-897 transceiver
g) Just received the Flex Radio 5000A SDR
i) Hexbeam antenna
j)VE3LHY sent a TH6DXX 6-element beam.
It is going to be a very busy next couple of months and I hope we will be up to the task.

2010 Update

With all the activities in 2009, it just went by fast. I was still in the rebuilding mode and am very proud that I was able to finally get my Extra Class License (Class A). New equipment were brought in. I was able to acquire a Kenwood TS-570 DG as well as an SB-221 Linear Amplifier and an MFJ 3 KW Differential T Tuner. Preparations are being made to get the linear on the air.

In June of 2010, the 17th Grand Eyeball and PARA Convention were held. An excellent fellowship of hams was experienced by myself and many others.

Before the month was over, we were able to put up the tower which we intend to use for a 3-band yagi. As always we are getting much support from many hams and civilians alike.

Time Flies

I just noticed that my last, and first entry, was sometime April 2009. Quite a bit has happened. I have rediscovered the joy of operating on HF and it has been wonderful. Hearing those DX stations and CW brings me back to the time when I was hot and heavy into operating the high school's amateur radio station. Now I have my own station and am having a wonderful time.

I was able to have put put up a dipole for 40 meters and this has just ratchetted up the fun factor. I have brought the station down at the farm and just had a buttload of of fun operating there with my former club station and my current club station. I have even operated there on my own and really, just when you think you've seen it all, our hobby presents you with a new aspect.

ARES. Earlier in the month, just learned that I passed my Extra Class exam and was itching to use the new callsign. 26th of September brought such a heavy downpour that much of the northern part of the country was inundated with flooding. I was at the farm testin g out the G5RV which was relocated and I was having the time of my life. Then the rains came. I had to pack my things and leave the verynext day but due to them widespread flooding, the normally 2-hour trip turned into a 36-hour adventure of finding a route, droppng off my equipment at a friend's QTH and walking through floodwaters.

I received a text message that ARES is activated and to quickly setup ASAP!!! My former club was designated as 2-meter control for the District. I pulled out my IC-736 and got on air as soon as I can. This was my first ARES experience and true enough, it really kept you going. Just the idea that you are able to use your hobby to be of help was enouggh motivation. Lessons learned flashed through my head. I decided that I would not be caught unprepared again, if I can help it.

Sure enough we had three more typhoons that necessitated the activation of ARES. Our response was more measured and coordinated. We're taking baby steps, but we're walking faster now.

Jojo,
God bless ya, for putting in the time and training so that you have been able to help in time of need with your ARES work. This is truly one of the best things Hams do for others. They jump in and give help when it is really needed the most. Just wanted to THANK YOU on behalf of all us other Hams that mostly just rag chew. There are really great people all over the world, Jojo, you are one of them. Good job Brother Ham. All the Best. 73 Bruce KE7LGD

Where I Learned Ham Radio - DX1DBT
Where I Learned Ham Radio - DX1DBT

DV1VHY's Blog Post - 4/19/2009 3:36:44 PM

DV1VHY - First Blog

I was away from ham radio for over 30 years. I got started in the hobby during my high school days at the Don Bosco Technical Institute. By the time I was a senior in high school, I was the president of the school's amateur radio club, DU1DBT. The current callsign of the club is DX1DBT. Upon graduation, I was volunteered to be an operator for the amateur radio station of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines' National Headquarters.

I was blessed to have hams who are passionate with the hobby. DU1FVE (now AH6BV/W1) was my first mentor. He introduced me to the hobby. Alongside him was DU1CRD, Ramon Dimacali. These two gave me my foundation in ham radio. They were the seniors in my high school at the time.

After high school, I met the preeminent hams in my district. DU1EH (SK) and DU1RC picked me up as a late teen and allowed me to expand my knowledge of hsm radio and the world.

In 1976, I enlisted with the US Navy and made it through 24 years as a career. The family moved back to the Philippines in 2000.

I took my entry-level examination in May of 2008 and got my callsign in June. Due to a mixup, I was given the callsign DW1OLV. Found out that the call has been issued already but I just took the Class B exam and passed it, then I changed my callsign to the present on, DV1VHY.

Returning to ham radio was a thrill. I started out using the echolink, operating strictly on the PC. I acquired the Icom V82 HT and was finally able to transmit over the air. My fellow-retiree, W7AVL, Alex, brought a Kenwood TM-271A transceiver for me and I was finally equipped with a base station.

Still, I longed to get back on HF. There are two internet based programs that simulates the ham radio environment. CQ-100 and Hamsphere. Though convenient and allows you to have QSOs, nothing still beats putting out your own RF and having a QSO, even if it is just within the island.

I was able to acquire a used Kenwood TS-520 through my brother-in-law, Paul. A better deal you can not find. Along with an MFJ tuner, I am currently operating with a long wire antenna.

I am just happy to be back.

73,

jojo
