My Ham Radio Interests
Hi everyone, thanks for looking at my shack. My name is David Johnston.I am happily married for 20 years and have 2 sons.I live in West Yorksihre,England.I have been a SWL and cb'er for over 30 years.I was persuaded to sit my foundation exam in 08.the Uk has 3 levels of ham licence,FOUNDATION:limited to 10watts INTERMEDATE:limited to 50watts and ADVANCED:limited to full power ,which is 400watts in this country.I sat and passed my foundation in sept 08 and then sat and passed my intermediate in nov08.I will hopefully sit my advanced one day, memory depending.CB and 11m operation is frowned upon in the uk,probably due to the muppets(wasters)and the bad language they use all the time.As im a newbie to the ham scene im still learning, though at least im big enough to admit it,some of the G3'S & G licence holders seem to think they know everything because they sat their exam hundreds of years ago(hihi) when things "we're so much harder when we done it".the morse code is no longer part of the exam,it was dropped a few years ago to entice more bodys into the hobby, upsetting a lot of the G3'SG4'S G5'S etc.As im still learning im still discovering parts of the hobby i like.at the moment im messing around with WX pictures.I have also just discovered nodes and talking to foreign stations on 2m.

Equipment
My station is a small modest one,but it works for me.it will no doubt get bigger the longer im in the hobby.

Other Interests
My main hobby is radio, but my other hobby is fishing, although i cant do to much now thanks to bad health, but i do get out in the summer months when its warmer. My dream is to get to the USA and trying bass fishing.Im enjoying WX pictures at the moment, but i would like to learn cw in the future, but that will depend on my memory getting better. Its not that im a skintflint but i really enjoy making antennas,so i never buy what i could make.Granted it might not look as pretty but i'll bet you it will work better as i make it in my surroundings.I would love to be able to make/build atu's,transceviers etc,but my memory lets me down with the things i need to know/learn.If i could make/build then i would be able to go for my advanced licence.I havent made a vk contact yet with my 50watt limit, but i have made a VE/VO1 contact with my H/B antenna and 2 watts.so maybe i dont need the advanced 400 watt ticket afterall.hihi.Hope to hear you all on the air sometime....73

Clubs
I was a member of PDARS. G3FYQ
Pontefract and district amateur radio society.

The man who most helped me through my exam was Chris.(M0JRQ)And i have him to thank for having a ham licence.I have a bad memory through a bad car smash 20 yrs ago,and Chris was very patient and very helpful.I am no longer a member of PDARS as i got the feeling of not fitting in with the other G3s etc.

02/05/2010..There seems to be a mix up with what i have written.I have nothing but praise for Pontefract radio club. The problem i had with G3's had nothing to do with the pontefract radio club.It was me that felt i didnt fit in to the club and nothing to do with the club nor its members. The club bent over backwards to help me when i needed it and cant recommend and praise the club enough. They won the region 4 award in 09 and thoroughly deserve it for all their work for the hobby and with the scouts and guides.I hope this clears things up abit...keep up the good work PDARS....
